"Bengal Awakens' is a wide-ranging account of West Bengal's political transformation, tracing the state's journey from its role in India's freedom struggle through decades of Left and Trinamool Congress rule to the BJP's rise and eventual electoral victory in the 2026 Assembly election. Drawing on roughly eighteen months of on-ground travel and interviews across the state, from Murshidabad and Asansol to Sandeshkhali and the tea gardens of North Bengal, K.K. Upadhyay blends reportage, oral history, and political narrative to explain how a party once marginal in Bengal built itself into a governing force.

The book moves chronologically through key chapters of the state's history, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee's legacy, the 'long betrayal' of Congress rule, the Left's decline, the promise and disillusionment of 'Poriborton, and the BJP's slow organisational build-up after 2014, before turning to a detailed, almost day-by-day chronicle of the 2026 campaign itself: its manifesto, leadership tours, viral moments, and the climactic swearing-in at Brigade Parade Ground. Structured as both a personal travelogue and a documentary record, the book positions itself as a study of grassroots political change rather than a simple electoral chronicle."
