दिलीप सिन्हा उपलब्धियों से भरे वर्ष 2011-2012 की अवधि में सुरक्षा परिषद् की अपनी सदस्यता के दौरान भारत के संयुक्त राष्ट्र मामलों के प्रमुख थे। वे जिनेवा में संयुक्त राष्ट्र के राजदूत रहे, जहाँ उन्हें 2014 में संयुक्त राष्ट्र मानवाधिकार परिषद् का उपाध्यक्ष तथा दक्षिण केंद्र का उपसभापति चुना गया। सिन्हा ने लीबिया और सीरिया में व्याप्त संकट के संबंध में सुरक्षा परिषद् में तथा श्रीलंका के लिए मानवाधिकार परिषद् में भारत की प्रतिक्रिया को संचालित किया।
अपने राजनयिक जीवन के दौरान, सिन्हा ने पाकिस्तान, अफगानिस्तान और ईरान के साथ भारत के संबंधों की अगुआई की तथा जर्मनी, मिस्र, पाकिस्तान, ब्राजील, बांग्लादेश और यूनान में अपनी सेवाएँ दीं।
दिलीप सिन्हा अब भारत में ही रहकर लेखन-कार्य करते हैं और व्याख्यान देते हैं।
