"The Guru Granth Sahib is the Holy Scripture of the Sikhs. It contains the Bani (hymns) of the Sikh Gurus and Saints and serves as a spiritual guide with tenets for living a life of truth, devotion, service, and universal brotherhood. The Guru Granth Sahib is revered as the Living Guru, and hence its pages are referred to as Angs (pronounced ‘ung’), meaning ‘parts’ of the Granth. The Granth is a compilation of 1430 Angs.
Salok Mahalla Nauvaan, composed by Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, the Ninth Patshahi (Guru) of the Sikhs, was incorporated into the Sri Guru Granth Sahib by his son, the Tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. These Salokas form the culminating and concluding portion of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, extending from Ang 1426 to Ang 1429. The composition consists of 57 Salokas, each a complete couplet, replete with Guru Maharaj's profound moral and spiritual teachings. The Salokas are believed to have been composed while Guru Sahib was imprisoned in the Kotwali at Chandni Chowk, Delhi, before being executed under the orders of Aurangzeb."
