जन्म 28 सितंबर, 1930 को रायपुर (छत्तीसगढ़) में म.प्र. के प्रथम मुख्यमंत्री पं. रविशंकर शुक्ल के घर में। सन् 1979 से लेखन प्रारंभ किया। ‘शुगन पक्षी’, ‘कृष्ण पक्ष’, ‘अमृत घट’, ‘मोहभंग’, ‘बूँद-बूँद अमृत’ और ‘आठवाँ जन्म’ सशक्त सामाजिक उपन्यास, जिनमें स्त्री की समस्याओं को बहुत जानदार ढंग से उभारा गया है।
जीवनकाल में लगभग 40 पुस्तकें प्रकाशित और 4 अप्रकाशित पांडुलिपियाँ प्रकाशन की प्रक्रिया में हैं। ‘लता और वृक्ष’ का प्रकाशन मरणोपरांत किया जा रहा है। ‘मैं और मेरा समय’ आत्मकथात्मक उपन्यास। सहज भावों से ओत-प्रोत कविताओं का बहुचर्चित संकलन ‘अतिशक्षण’। ‘पत्ते की नाव’, ‘मीठी बोली’, ‘पीली हवेली’, ‘कुटकुट चूहा’ और ‘नन्हे जासूस’ लोकप्रिय बालकथाएँ।
वर्ष 2002 के हिंदी-सेवी सम्मान से सम्मानित और उ.प्र. हिंदी संस्थान द्वारा ‘पं. दीनदयाल उपाध्याय पुरस्कार’ से विभूषित। यूनेस्को द्वारा ‘राष्ट्रीय हिंदी-सेवी सहस्राब्दी सम्मान’ एवं म.प्र. राजभाषा प्रचार समिति द्वारा ‘नारी लेखन पुरस्कार’ से सम्मानित।
